| Subject: | THANK YOU for approving the casino ballot question |
Dear City Council:
This area has come so far, through sustainable, healthy growth.
There is no good reason to drop a casino right on the edge of a
solid, middle class neighborhood, especially if it is clearly
not wanted.
It is understandable that foxwoods desires the location, but
wouldn't it make more sense to put it an area of the city that
wants the economic boost?
A casino would only tear apart the fabric of South
Philadelphia; in my opinion, Philadelphia at its best.

Dear Mayor Street:
We are thankful that the casino ballot questions
was approved. We are concerned about the
quality of life in the city, and casinos have
made living conditions much worse in other
cities.

Dear Mayor Street:
Please support us citizens, as well as your 17 City Council
Members, and DO NOT veto referendum limiting casinos from being
built within 1500 feet of a residence, school or place of
worship. Casinos and neighborhoods are not a good mix. Having
casinos built in or near a neighborhood would change the very
fiber, fabric and character of a neighborhood and pollute it
with unnecessary negative social ills. Please support your
citizens and constituents and protect us. DO NO veto this
referendum.
Thank you for your consideration,

Dear Mayor Street:
I urge you to NOT veto the casino referendum which states casinos
should not be within 1500 feet of homes, schools, churches,
libraries and playgrounds.
Today I spoke with a woman who lives on 12th street. She worked
in the casinos in Atlantic City for many years as a dealer and
floor supervisor. She is adamantly opposed to casinos coming to
Philadelphia. She told me about the violence committed by angry
patrons, ("How do you think people act who just lost their rent
money or mortgage payment?") She also told me of the casinos'
endless efforts to get all a patron's money and, if someone
should win, the casinos' efforts to get their money back. All
amenities such as room or food comps are nothing more than ways
to keep a patron in a casino or to get a patron back in the
casino so they can get their money back plus more.
If you as mayor give up your control of Philadelphia - give your
control over to Harrisburg -, history will vilify you along with
Senator Fumo (who everyone now knows is a crook) and Governor
Rendell (whose large campaign contributors are the Foxwoods
investors) Please don't put yourself in their company. You're
better than that. Remember you are elected to represent the
citizens of Philadelphia. Let the citizens vote thereby telling
you how they feel about the issue.
Most sincerely,
Marj Rosenblum

Dear Mayor Street:
I am angry. I share my anger with the citizens of Philadelphia
over the indication that you may veto the casino referendum. How
can a Mayor who is supposed to represent the citizens of
Philadelphia choose to deny those citizens the right to choose
what will happen to their neighborhoods? I ask you to look
beyond the politics of today and toward how people in
Philadelphia and around the country will view this moment; did
you stand with or against the citizens of Philadelphia?
And remember that I and my fellow citizens are not only angry,
more importantly we are ORGANIZED. Even as we fume over the
idea that any elected official would choose the side of special
interests over citizens, we are taking notes as to who indeed are
on the side of the citizens.

Mr. Mayor, as a citizen of the city of Philadelphia, I believe we have the right to
vote on the casino referendum that was passed by our elected city council. There
hasn't been nearly enough discussion on this matter and I believe as a resident of
Northern Liberties our voices need to be heard before we embark this path.
Thank You.

Dear Mayor Street:
I am writing to ask you to not veto the casino referendum.
Even if you do believe that the bill is illegal (although I've
read strong legal arguments that make be believe otherwise), what
is the harm in allowing a question to appear on the primary ballot?
This represents the first real opportunity for the Citizens of
Philadelphia to individually speak out on this issue. If the
courts of this Commonwealth find the referendum to be illegal
after May 15, so be it, but at least the people had their chance
to be heard. If you choose to spike the referendum before then,
you are effectively denying your constituents of their voice. I
know you are not up for reelection, but is that really how you
want to end your terms as mayor?

Dear Mr. Mayor: With all the problems the city has, we don't
need more problems that the casinos will give us. Traffic
congestion, crime and people pollution will ruin our
neighborhoods and help only the people that own the casinos.
Please allow the people that live in the neighborhood to decide

My son attends school just a few blocks away from one of the

approved. But I can understand why people don't want a casino,
and all his associated headaches, in their neighborhoods.
This is a question of local democracy. Don't veto this
