11/20/2002 Ikea's Future Site in South Philly (Ed Goppelt)
The Ikea site is located a little further south on Columbus Blvd. than the Home Depot/Walmart shopping
center. I estimate it is about a 10-15 minute drive from Center City. According to
Councilman DiCicco's aide David Fitz, the new site measures approximately 300,000 sq. ft. It is a parallelogram shaped parcel
bounded by Columbus Blvd. to the East, Weccacoe St. to the West and Snyder Ave. and Porter St. to the North
and South respectively.

Home Depot/Wal*Mart Shopping Center
2002/11/20 South Philly is poised
to become a major shopping destination
for the region. Columbus Blvd. has
attracted a number of major retailers
including the Home Depot pictured here,
Target and now Ikea. As incredible
as it may seem, I suspect that suburbanites
from New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania
will soon be heading to South Philly to do at least some of their shopping.

2002/11/20 The site appears to be a large
asphalt expanse that is well on its
way to becoming scrub land.

Port Facility Opposite Ikea Site
2002/11/20 The port became a sticking point
in the Ikea negotiations. Some officials
wanted to keep the Ikea land vacant
for possible future expansion of the port.
Under the
deal reached today, this pier
will continue to function as a part of the port.
