Subject:   Governor Rendell: Move the Casinos!

Dear Governor Rendell:

William Penn wrote:

And Thou Philadelphia
the virgin settlement of this province
named before thou wert born
what love
what care
what service
and what travail have there been to bring thee forth and
preserve thee from such as would abuse and defile thee.
O that thou mayest be kept from the evil that would overwhelm
thee
That faithful to the God of thy mercies
in the life of righteousness
thou mayest be preserved to the end.
My soul prays to God for thee
That thou mayest stand in the day of trial
That thy children may be blest of the lord...

(William Penns -Prayer for Philadelphia- 1684)

You MUST Protect our Neighborhoods and Children!
MOVE THE CASINOS!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject:   Governor Rendell: Move the Casinos!

Dear Governor Rendell:

So how is it that casinos MUST be placed 10 miles from a race
track and yet two casinos can be located within 3 miles of each
other.

If that doesn't smell of outright manipulation (read corruption)
I don't know what does!

Do you really think we are that dumb, or do you simply not care.
Outrageous!

From:MOR
To:Senator Fumo, Representative O'Brien, Governor Rendell
Date:Thursday, 10/11/07
Subject:   You HAVE the power to Move the Casinos!

Mr.Rendell:

I reject your declaration that you have no power over casino re-
location and consider your lack of action an abandonment of the
office for which we elected you. We still live in a democracy
under the rule of law; we did not elect the gambling industry to
run Pennsylvania.

You write, in your October 9th letter, that "the commonwealth
has no authority to require them to accept alternative sites."
As Governor, you know that this is not true and that you still
have the power to affect casino locations.

Therefore, your behavior raises the question of why you would
suggest otherwise. Perhaps the $2 million in campaign
contributions from 1999-2002 by racetrack owners, casino
executives and other businesses holding gambling interests
poured into your political coffers have distorted your ethical
compass? Over $800,000 of those contributions have gone
directly to your campaign. [Bob Warner, "How Gambling $$ Funds
PA Politics - & Rendell," Philadelphia Daily News, 3/3/03]

Or perhaps your own close affiliation with the casino investors
has blinded and corrupted you?

You've tried to strip Philadelphia of its rightful authority --
(though our citizens and council members and state reps have
found more strength to resist you than you believed possible.)
And now you claim you too have no authority? You are therefore
directly stating that the casino industry is answerable to no
one -- not the city, not the state, not the politicians, not the
citizens not the office of the governor itself!!! How dare you!?
How can you sleep at night!?

I urge you to support House Bill #1477, which is precisely what
the commonwealth can do to relocate these slot slums- by
creating a buffer between them and our homes. As you know, HR
1477 is widely supported by Philadelphians.

Because of your horrendous failure in protecting citizens from
the devastation casinos would inflict upon us, WE THE PEOPLE
will not give up. We will persevere and continue to fight to
move these slot slums away from EVERY neighborhood!

Subject:   Governor Rendell: Move the Casinos!

Dear Governor Rendell:
You promised neighborhood leaders you would try to persuade the
casinos to relocate if somebody came to you with suitable
sites. Councilman DiCicco provided you with such a list on
August 9, but to date neither the Councilman nor the 150,000
people he represents have heard back from you.

I ask you to do the following by October 12, 2007 at the
latest:

Provide me and Councilman DiCicco with a detailed report
describing your efforts to persuade the casinos to move and
your progress to date.
Convene a blue ribbon panel of experts to study and recommend
alternative locations using Councilman DiCicco's list as a
starting point.
Ask the Supreme Court not to rule on any casino's request for
zoning permits until January 15, 2008 so that you and the
casinos have enough time to thoroughly explore moving their
facilities elsewhere.
Thank you for your past support of Philadelphia's neighborhoods
and for the families and children who live in them. Please let
me know if you can accommodate my request for action on your
part.

Subject:   Governor Rendell: Move the Casinos!

Dear Governor Rendell:

No other American city has placed casinos as close to
neighborhoods as is currently proposed, given the well known
negative impacts of casinos on surrounding communities. With
available alternatives, there is no justification for ruining
existing communities. Since the government and your (unelected)
appointees to the Gaming Control Board have created the
situation we are in, it is the government's problem to fix.

Subject:   Governor Rendell: Move the Casinos!

Dear Governor Rendell:

Please move the casinos to be not it anyone's neighborhood.
Put them outside of Philadelphia where there are no residences,
churches, schools or playgrounds. We don't want them in
anyone's neighborhood, why plague anyone? The casinos are no
good no matter where they are. They are 10,000 times worse if
they are near where people live, work and play. How would you
propose that the traffic for people who work here get into town
or get home? Businesses will suffer and leave. You will be
breaking down anything good that you helped build up in this
city. Nothing good and legitimate will remain. Will you stand
up and defend casinos when the first drunk driver kills an
innocent child playing in front of his home? What will you say
to all the small businessman and large companies who were
persuaded to come here when there was promise? Do you want to
be found in a seedy motel room with prostitutes like Atlantic
City's Mayor, or worse, go missing? Use your head. Don't let
evil triumph over good. Do you want your legacy to be as the
man who destroyed the sixth largest city in the United States?
Doesn't Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, deserve
better than to be raped and pillaged? I don't think this is
what William Penn had in mind for his Country-Town. We have a
gift here, don't take it for granted, don't sell us out. This
city needs help for its murder rate and casinos will be putting
salt in ou wound. Help us, don't hurt us.

career will be destroyed when people look back at Philly and
see another Atlantic City.

Dear Governor Rendell:
First let me say that I voted for you as mayor and governor.
Please consider moving Foxwoods Casino to a more suitable
location along the river. Thwer are places closer to the Walt
Whitman / Front Street exit of I 95 that would not cause
serious problems to an established family community. Many
people like my seld are considering selling their homes (at a
loss)and leaving the city if Foxwoods is built at the site it
was awarded without any input from the community. Can the city
really afford to loose tax revenue at the expense of a casino.
Please move Foxwoods out our backyard.
Thank you.
