Subject:   Defend Our Civil Liberties: the Patriot Act Must Go!

Dear Elected Officials,

In a recent article by Jimmy Breslin that appeared in Newsday we
learn of the arrest by the FBI of an American citizen, one Iyman
Faris, of Columbus, Ohio. The arrest took place around March 1
of this year. Nothing has been heard of this man since.
Whether he was permitted to make a phone call, acquire a lawyer,
or where he's been detained is information no longer available
to the public. Nothing. And no one in the press has been able
to have access to him. If this can happen to one citizen, it
could happen to any of us. I beseech you to do all you can to
defend our civil liberties and seek a repeal of the erroeneously
labeled Patriot Act as soon as possible. I do not want to live
in a Fascist state.

Dear Elected Officials:
In the wake of the stunning military achievements of the last 2
weeks, it should be clear that the US has overwhelming military
superiority over any foe we should encounter. In the last 10
years over $2.5 trillion dollars have been spent on National
Defense via the Armed Forces. Untold billions more in National
Security through black budget intelligence efforts. Clearly,
we are not outspent, outgunned. And yet we have been attacked
on our soil by an enemy we did not confront not because we are
unalert, unprepared or don't have people who care about their
job to protect us. Many reports indicate numerous middle level
analysts who put together the pieces only to be ignored. The
National Security Act of 1947 gave us the CIA, the NSA as well
as a National Security Council and Chief who advises the
President on a Cabinent level. We do not need any more laws,
agencies etc. We certainly do not need a patriot act as it
stands or new embelishments as proposed of patriot II.
Homeland security, National Security, the Department of
Defense? When will it end and what will become if we do not
rid ourselves of this overreaction?

Dear Elected Officials:
Please defend our civil liberties by making sure that
Philadelphia, its birthplace in America, joins other cities in
making sure the Patriot Act will not be applied in our city.
Thank you for supporting Councilman Ortiz's legislation. There
can be no compromise of our freedoms.

Dear Elected Officials:
The constitution is meant to be the ultimate law of the land.
And as an American I am satisfied with the freedom it allows me.
The Patriot act is meant to superseed the Constitution,
rendering it null and void. Who decides when to implement the
Patriot act? What if they make a mistake? What's my protection
from tyranny? Keep the constitution valid. Abolish the Patriot
Act
