| Subject: | Stop Work at SugarHouse! |
Dear Mayor Nutter:
Thank you for revoking the SugarHouse submerged lands license!
Your predecessor, on his last day in office, authorized grading
permits for the site of the proposed Sugarhouse casino. The
Pennsylvania General Assembly has sued to stop the usurpation of
state authority on riparian lands on the Delaware waterfront.
Title to the site is clouded by the riparian land issues and use
and zoning permits should never have been issued and building
permits, which require a completed zoning permit, should be held
until the matter is resolved.
Given the overarching issues and the seriousness of the
situation, I ask that you issue a Stop Work Order (SWO) to halt
any grading and excavation at the SugarHouse location.
In addition, and no less important, is the fact that the initial
archeological investigations on the site have uncovered
significant 3500 year old Native American artifacts. The
Pennsylvania Museum and Historic Commission must be given the
proper opportunity to determine their importance before ongoing
work obliterates any future recoveries.
Your swift action will reinforce your commitment to thoroughly
review all decision related to the proposed casino locations.
Please take action immediately to demonstrate your support of the
people who overwhelming backed you in your campaign for a New
Philadelphia!!
Sincerely yours,
Eugenie Perret

Dear Mayor Nutter:
Congratulations on your election and your ambitious goals for Philadelphia's future!
I am writing to request that the grading and excavation permits for the SugarHouse
casino, authorized on John Street's last day as Mayor, be withdrawn.
Title to this property is unclear, and all permits should accordingly be withheld until
property ownership and the right of the Pennsylvania General Assembly to grant
riparian rights are resolved.
Initial archeological investigations on the SugarHouse site have revealed significant
Native American artifacts dating from at least 1500 B.C.E. The site is also known to
have been a strategic encampment by the British during the Revolutionary War. Its
role in the development of our nation's history is significant and the site should be
fully researched. As a result, the Pennsylvania Museum and Historic Commission
will need an opportunity to make a full evaluation of the potential historical value of
the site before this chapter in Philadelphia's history is permanently lost.
A Stop Work Order (SWO) for grading and excavation would permit the legal issues,
as well as the archeological and historical research, to be resolved.
Your efforts in this matter would serve to benefit the City and its residents and
preserve Philadelphia's premier position in our nation's history.

Dear Mayor Nutter:
Casinos suck! I do not want to raise my children near a casino.
The fact that pre-colonial remains have been found on the
Sugarhouse site just goes to show you that it is literally built
on an Indian burial ground - cursed from the start!
Casinos promise great fortune to its patrons and communities and
deliver blight and heartache. Northern Liberties is developing
quite nicely without the gaming industry and I believe there are
no truly independent studies that would show any significant
economic benefit to the neighborhood, after considering the net
effect on the neighborhood - trash, traffic, environment damage,
crime, etc. If it can't be avoided, put gambling by the stadiums
as far away from the neighborhoods in South Philly as possible.
Let's have a real waterfront that embraces the waterway and the
historic heritage of Philadelphia. What does it say about us
and what we value to have a casino a stone's throw from Penn
Treaty park? Resist the greed mongers.
Thanks.

Dear Mayor Nutter:
Please make Sugar House take the time to collect and record archaeological
information from that site. Esp. since a site is known to be located there. In the end
that historical information will be more valuable long term to the city than a casino.
In a city bases a part of it's economy on history we could potentially be throwing
away an asset if we fail to look into it. For that matter couldn't the casino use it for
marketing just as easily. Who needs an Eiffel Tower replica when you could have a
pit full of archaeologists digging up a British fort in the center of your slot floor.

incredible city.
Philadelphia has the opportunity to excel and become a
exceptional city but casino development will truly stop tis from
happening this is not "good Development" Please protect our
city from these hegemons coming and taking over.
Have you ever driven to Home Depot on a Saturday.....it takes 45
in from northern liberties imagine how long the trip will take
when you add two casinos to this drive.
Regardless.....we must stop all construction in order to better
preserve, investigate , and take advantage of the archeologiclal
findings on the site! Imagine how this will boost our economy
and increase tourism.....
Well Hope we will become the exceptional city with proper
riverfront development that in the long run will make Philly the
most incredible city
Thanks Again for all the work you have done to help us!!

Stop work on Sugarhouse. This is an historic site that we need to preserve, not cover
with a big box casino.
Our riverfront should represent the culture and preserve and protect our heritage as
Philadelphians. The riverfront should be green and accessible. Our city needs to
create more green recreational spaces and show off our history, not pave them over
with blacktop and acres of windowless bleak architecture.
