Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
As a resident and law abiding citizen of Philadelphia I have
joined with other members of the community to plead with city
coucil and urge that the general population may be allowed to
view public records. Moreover, I believe it is safe to say that
these documents are not truly public if all persons who wish to
have access to them for applicable purposes are denied the
opportunity. This plea calls for the consideration of making
the said records readily available to the public.
Thank You,

Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
I believe in government transparency and the right of the
voters to hold elected officials accountable for their actions
and to champion the actions of those officials who act in a
fair and just way. Releasing public records would allow both
situations to flow to us more freely. I also believe that
any service rendered to a citizen should be done so via the
least cost means. In the event the hurdle to share records
with us is due to cost, I recommend that we review our current
system of collecting the data and means in which it is
distributed. In today's age of the internet, the cost for us
to retrieve public records should not be prohibitive. As you
can see, I too concur that public records should be available
upon demand.
Thank you for examining this issue and making a difference in
the communities we live and work.

Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
I believe all records that are public should be public. Why
should only those in politics have access to these records? It
will benefit all that are looking to buy property for personal
use or for non-profit organizations.Currently I am assisting my
Pastor in looking for a church building that we can use to
impact our community in a positive way. I must say
Hallwatch.org is extremely helpful to me especially because I
work from morning to evening and never have time to go to city
hall. Thanks hallwatch.

Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
I too wish to chime in on the matter of Public Records
availability. Of course they should be easily available.
There is little or no reasonable excuse for the vast majority of
public records to be withheld from general public view.
Included in scope of open records should be budgetary matters.
Surely the city has a budget and that budget is tracked. Why is
this information not easily available? Monthly reporting of tax
collections and other revenue should be reported as well as
monthly reporting of spending. Within those reports should be
notations that indicate if budget expectations are being met as
planned.
Open records should be made available by the School Board as well
as the City. Taxpayers have a right to know what is going on
there too.

Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
I urge you to disclose public records to the citizens who elected
you. I pay wage taxes to fund your government, and I voted in
the primary election in May 2004 and on election day in November
2004. I intend to buy a house in this city because it is a
wonderful place to live. We have world-class art museums and
concert halls, gorgeous architecture, and some of the most
prestigious universities, hospitals, and medical schools in the
country. I want to make my life here.
However, I need some pledge of faith from my local legislators
that the corruption being investigated by the FBI will cease
immediately. A good start would be to disclose addresses of
absentee landlords so people like me can write them letters and
offer to buy their blighted properties. I want to buy and
restore a boarded-up house in this city and live in it. I will
gladly pay my property taxes if I can manage to contact the
tax-delinquent owner and negotiate a sale. This will generate
more revenue for city services and improve property value for
those already living here.
Please show that you truly mean to end corruption in city
government by disclosing the information requested by Ed Goppelt
and Hallwatch.org. Even if current legislators have information
they'd rather keep secret, I will still vote for them if they
pledge to discontinue unethical behavior, and back up this pledge
by releasing public records.

Philadelphia Public records are exactly that...public records.
It is a mockery to think that here in Philadelphia, the very
birthplace of freedom in the United States, that our right to
know as a citizenry is being denied us by the government, of a
city who they swore to serve when they took office.
Open the records.
And city council: 80% of you need to learn to go to work ,

Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
My neighborhood community group has just signed up with Ed
Goppelt's excellent Hallwatch service. This is one of the few
tools we have to do exhaustive research on the status of problem
properties in our neighborhood, as well as to follow actions in
city and state government that impact our community.
I can't tell you how frustrating we've found it to be to get
meaningful action taken on properties that are abandoned,
severely deteriorated, and/or seriously tax delinquent. And we've
heard enough sobering accounts of back-room dealing to keep us
wary of sending properties to sheriff's sale for fear that
they'll end up in the hands of city-connected speculators and
remain a blight for years to come. All the while, our great city
complains of being strapped for funds. Collect your taxes owed,
prosecute property violations, and assure that the sheriff's sale
process operates entirely above board, and you'll raise major
revenues.
Without access to the kinds of public records we will get through
Hallwatch, we would have no way of following the trail of
payments and non-payments, or actions and inactions, that
perpetuate blight in our neighborhood and give us something to go
on in hopes of generating some positive changes. Please keep all
public records open and accessible to the public. Ideally, you
should put Mr. Goppelt's service out of business by providing
these records yourselves, in a form easily accessible to the public.
Thank you

Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
In our democratic society, public records must be available for
scrutiny, for a number of reasons.
First, the government belongs to the people, who have a right to
access what is theirs, including information that our
representatives of government generate and maintain.
Second, to insure that our public servants are held accountable
for the trust we steadfastly place in them, we must be able to
view their work, and the easiest and least invasive way to do so
is through the accessibility to information that results from
their work.
Third, anyone who deals with the City is dealing with a public
entity, and does not have a right to maintain their dealings
private.
Thank you for your consideration.

homes that are owned by the city should be made public. I am a

buy one of your city owned homes, and make Philadelphia a
wounderful City so that my kids can stay here just as i have for

Dear City Council and Mr. Mayor:
As a journalist, I have had to struggle to obtain records that I
know legally should be public. Often I have hit dead ends trying
to find this information. A good cure for some of our ailing
neighborhoods could be if the persons responsible for abandoned
and invaded properties have to be held responsible. Many of these
buildings are havens for people who are selling or using druges.
I feel it is a good first step that the owners of some of these
properties are now known to the public. I hope other inroads into
the publics right to know will be opened.
