To:Representative Cohen, Representative DeWeese, Senator Fumo, Representative James, Representative Perzel, Governor Rendell, Representative Smith, Representative Veon
Date:Tuesday, 10/17/06
Subject:   Vote NO on SB 862!

To my elected officials:

Bill SB-862 equalls "taxation without representation" for the
voters in Philadelphia, vote NO, and support the rights of
Philadelphians.

Date:Tuesday, 10/17/06
Subject:   Please Vote NO on SB 862!

To my elected officials:

As a resident of Philadelphia's Northern Liberties neighborhood,
I have a particular interest in the development of land along the
Delaware River north of Penn's Landing. I believe that SB 862
will adversely impact my ability to have my right to a voice in
the development of this tract of land that is so close to my
home. Please vote no on SB 862. I'll be watching...and voting.

Thanks.

To my elected officials:

This will be my second letter on this issue. Please VOTE NO on SB 862. This is a
huge slap in the face to the city these casinos will deface. The very least people
expected was that zoning issues would remain under the control of the citizens
most affected by them. Harrisburg should not be allowed full control over casinos
in Philadelphia. Those Philadelphians who have suggested otherwise while in
Harrisburg are the very people who can't be trusted here. We the people suffer the
consequences. Yet again. Is anyone with a conscience paying any attention at all? Or
is that just a silly question?

Subject:   Vote NO on SB 862!

To my elected officials:

As you well know, the proposed "casino" is really only a slots
parlor that will attract the lower end of the socioeconomic
scale, and in turn, the accompanying blight. The development
will also exacerbate and already horrendous traffic situation
on Columbus Boulevard, as well as tax the existing sewer
system, which currently isn’t able to handle the sewage from
the existing development in the area. The quality of life
that we currently enjoy in a stable, middle-class neighborhood
would be severely compromised, if not destroyed, and for some
dubious notions of revenue generation.

To my elected officials:

We moved our family from the suburbs to the Pennsport
neighborhood one year ago. We made the move because of the
close sense of community and family that we have always felt
here. It is exactly that sense of community that will be lost
if Senate Bill 862 is passed. This area has finally become a
prosperous and thriving neighborhood of which we are proud to
be a part of. Families from outside the city are again starting
to enjoy what this city has to offer. The casino atmosphere
will certainly deter families from once again utilizing
Philadelphia's resources. If this bill is passed, the traffic
congestion through our neighborhoods alone is enough to make us
reconsider our choice to live here. Please vote NO to SB862!!
Our historic city has progressed too far to be turned it into a
cheesy casino town!

Subject:   SB 862 is a violation of local rights

To my elected officials:
Please do all you can to stop SB862, which is nothing more than a
giveaway of our waterfront to the gambling industry. I have heard
that most members of the Pa. Senate and Assembly hate
Philadelphia and Philadelphians. If they curse us with SB862,
there will be the proof.

To my elected officials:

The state is trying to pull a fast one on the citizens of
Philadelphia by stripping the city of regulatory and zoning
powers re the proposed casinos. Please don't be party to this
transgression, which is probably unconstitutional. Vote NO on SB
862!

To my elected officials:

I am writing to urge you to reject the SB862. The bill is a
caven in to the gaming indsutry that guts the city's right to
control the development of its area, grants favorable tax
breaks to the gaming industry, and gives one industry rights
which citizens can not challenge with respect to valuable strips
of property with almost no oversight or control. It is
Philadelphia property, after all. This is the
wrong bill for the wrong place at the wrong time. Vote against
it.

To my elected officials:

I am writing to urge you to oppose Senate Bill 862. I am
appalled that the state could take away all city control over
the location and construction standards of casinos and give
that authority to an unelected state board. Philadelphians
should have the same control that they would have over any
similar business in the city. There is no good reason to make
an exception for this one industry which already promises to
have a great impact on the landscape of Philadelphia - the
place that we live and work everyday.

To my elected officials:

Pennsport is where I live wth my family. However, we had no
say as to whether or not casinos would come to Philadelphia.
Further, we will have no say in whether or not a casino is
built three blocks from our home. Now the State wants to take
away our right to have any input on zoning and safety issues in
our own neighborhod. This is unjust. Please do the right thing
and VOTE NO on SB 862!

To my elected officials:

Philadelphians have been denied a voice in every part of the
process regarding casino development: there was no vote as to
whether we wanted them in our city; we have no say in which sites
will be picked and now SB 862 takes away our right to minimize
any negative impact the casinos will have on our neighborhoods.

Please stand up for the rights of your constituents -- vote no on
SB 862.

To my elected officials:

Please know that these spaces can be used in a more positive
way. Imagine Vegas and AC without the support of casino hotels
and resaurants. Residency surrounding these areas will never
be the same. Philadelphia's small streets can't handle the
timed traffic that this could cause. Why weren't the stadiums
placed closer to Center City? For these very reasons...look at
how much police intervention keeps the streets around Penrose
clear.
Please Please vote NO!

To my elected officials:

Dear Elected Officials,

I urge you to vote NO on Senate Bill SB 862. This bill, which
takes zoning power away from the communities in which casinos
will be placed, and gives it to the Gaming Control Board, is a
terrible idea. It's bad for Philadelphia, bad for
Philadelphians, and bad for Pennsylvania.

The only people it will be good for are those running the casinos.

Despite strong community protests, casinos have been pushed
forward in Philadelphia as an answer to the city's and the
state's problematic finances. Taking away the zoning rights of
communities is akin to robbing the people in those communities
not only of their voices, but also of their power.

If you care at all about your constituents, I urge you to vote NO
on SB 862.

Sincerely,

Matthew Gold

Please vote NO on SB862 because the Gambling Hustlers should
abide by all of the Zoning, Health, Fire, Billboard,
Environmental, and other laws.

The Gambling Hustlers are no different than any other
corporation. If you let them, they won't even pay the minimum
wage.

Please keep our tiny safety net intact.

To my elected officials:

Please vote NO on SB 862. Not only is it an injustice to the
residents of Philadelphia but the whole idea of casinos in
Philadelphia provides no REAL economic or civic benefit to the
city. Philadelphia simply does not need them. Only negative
effects can come of it. Voting no on SB 862 will be a step in
the right direction to protect the beauty & heritage of our city
and the rights of her citizens.

Sincerely,
