Trash Collection for Condo Owners (Bill # 010659)

TRASH COLLECTION BILL - UPCOMING VOTE BY CITY COUNCIL

Dear Condo Owner:

After years of lobbying (and complaining), condominium homeowners may finally get municipal trash collection service. This is a major development in our ongoing struggle to obtain the same municipal services afforded single-family homeowners. Right now, you pay for trash collection through your taxes and you pay for private collection through your association.

City Councilman Jim Kenney, together with Councilmen David Cohen and Frank DiCicco, successfully took Bill No. 010659 out of Committee and before City Council. Bill No. 010659 is now due for a final vote before City Council on Thursday, June 6, 2002.

This legislation if passed, would require city sanitation trucks to pick up trash at condominium and cooperative buildings. As Councilman Kenney said, "this is a matter of simple fairness".

However, passage of the proposed legislation is far from certain. There are City Councilpersons who are undecided about their position on Bill No. 010659 and the Mayor has not committed to signing it, if it passes.

With your help, we can convince our Council representatives to pass this important piece of legislation.

Here is what you can do

• If you have an affiliation with ANY of the Councilpersons, we urge you to pick up the phone and call them.
• Attend the hearing: A vote for final passage of Bill 010659 will be taken on June 6, 2002 at 10:00 AM in City Hall, Room 696. We encourage you to attend, bring signs supporting this Bill.
• Contact your City Councilpersons: We suggest that you focus on the "At Large" Councilpersons, the Mayor and your District Councilperson. . A list of all Council Members is attached for your convenience.
• Email your support of Bill No. 010659 by clicking here. Your statement of support for the trash collection bill will automatically faxed to all City Council members. You should refer to Bill No. 010659 in all communications with City Councilpersons and the Mayor.
