Subject:   What did you do to move the casinos?

Dear Governor Rendell:

Don't let the casinos ruin our beautiful neighborhoods!!!
Nowhere else in this country have casinos been permitted to
locate next to residential neighborhoods--only in Pennsylvania.

Please let me know what you are doing to right this wrong by
relocating the casinos away from my neighborhood. I know from
your letter of October 9 that you wrote the casinos and
suggested that they move. What else did you do?

According to this Inquirer story from August 3 you promised
neighborhood leaders that you would:

support resiting both casinos more than 1,500 feet away from
neighborhoods if viable sites were identified
urge the casinos developers to consider such sites
make state resources available to enable the process
Please provide me with specific answers about what you did to
keep each part of your promise to neighborhood leaders by
October 22, 2007.

Casinos and neighborhoods do not mix. Councilman Frank DiCicco
provided you on August 9 with other locations that would allow
the casinos to make money, but also protect neighborhoods.

As a responsible and respected public official, I expect you to
protect me and my family by requiring casinos to locate at
least 1500 ft from all neighborhoods. Rep. Babette Joseph's
House Bill 1477 would turn this common sense requirement into
law. Since you say you have no power to force the casinos to
move, I respectfully suggest that you take steps to obtain this
power by making the passage of House Bill 1477 your number one
goal in the legislature.

Thank you for your past support of Philadelphia's neighborhoods
and for people--especially children--who live in them.

Subject:   What did you do to move the casinos?

Dear Governor Rendell:

I attended the Philadelphia meeting when you said to a group of
DRNA delegates that you would present alternative sites to the
two casino operators. Of course, you are able to defend that you
met the letter of your obligation, but certainly, not the spirit
of our request for help.

At the time of the meeting, I was embarrassed by my
interpretation of your pledge of assistance as entire insincere
but worse, you are entirely insensate.

It is frustrating to witness our top-ranking politician shrug and
express powerlessness toward getting the job done. When have you
ever accepted defeat on an issue you felt strongly about? You
have always been better than that, when it suited you. Why not
this time?

Certainly, you have not been granted the legal option to resite
the casinos under Act 71, but when did you last need a legal tool
to get the job done? How would it not suit your purpose(s) to
have the casinos up and running sooner, by moving them to more
appropriate sites? Given your considerable political influence,
moving these two casinos is entirely possible, if you want to
respect the wishes of the people. Do you remember the people?

Sincerely,
Joe Schiavo

Dear Governor Rendell:
I do not get it. Do you know how many people are disppointed in
you. Why would you be on the side of the casinios that would be
destructative to the intergreity of the city. Do you not travel
about the city and see how difficult it is to move about.
Traffic is terrible now and having 32,000 more cars coming in
for the casinos would destroy the city by people moving out of
the city who are the main contributers, The tax base would be
reduced because property values goes down. Who would support
the city? Gamblers ; no because they have no money. Philly
does not have money to spare to enforce the illegal immigritants
being employed at various locatins throughout the city that has
been reported and nothing done just for an example or for
traffic laws violatons or for patrol beyond the weekend or for
real street repairs, etc
Get on the ball, Governer Rendell,,,,be on your people side who
has supported you for years and feel very betrayed now as I do,,,

Dear Ed,

We loved you as Mayor and hate you as Governor ..what happened
to you in Harrisburg. You forgot your roots. Wait let me
think, you still cheer for all the hometown teams right? Does
that mean you are still a Philadelphian?

YO, remember that word we use when we want to get someone's
attention? Here's the message Ed, MOVE THE CASINOS away from
our waterfront, homes, chuches, schools. PERIOD

Don't snow us that you can't do anything. You can. Remember
we're the ones who boo Santa Claus. Many of us have heard the
rumors: you want a job in Hilary's cabinet, or perhaps are
being considered for the VP job !!!!

Ed, we will turnout + e-mail blast Hilary's campaign like you
would never believe. Some of us already have written to her
saying you can NO LONGER deliver Philadelphia's votes. We will
pursue this course in earnest, if you feel too powerless to
MOVE THE CASINOS.

If you can't move 2 casinos, then you certainly shouldn't be
near the White House folks who work on much harder issues.

You know what Philadelphians are capable of. Remember your
roots and do the right thing.

Governor Rendell:

Yeah - I get it - we're all just suckers to you and your pals.

But do you think you can ignore us and we'll go away? Sorry-We
LIVE and WORK and are RAISING FAMILIES here and have much more
at stake than you may want to acknowledge.

SO WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS?

WHAT EXACTLY DID YOU DO TO GET THE CASINOS TO MOVE TO MORE
SUITABLE LOCATIONS???

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE PUT YOU WHERE
YOU ARE?

Why are you promoting the degradation of revitalized areas of
the city like this? Remember the tumbleweeds blowing down the
empty & dying streets of these areas in the not too distant
past?
Do you listen to the people who are talking about leaving this
city over this issue? What's that going to do to your precious
tax base? What is your plan? To drive everyone out of the
riverwards and leave all the neighborhoods to your cronies to
buy up real cheap? Yeah-property tax relief for all the
casinos.

Your lack of ambition to do some hard work and stand up for
what the PEOPLE want on this issue is deplorable. What happened
to you- or are you really this afraid to embrace true
democratic principles? Perhaps your gluttony, greed and lust
for power have led you to sell out the city for a pocketful of
casino chips and some extremely generous comps?

If you insist on ignoring the will of the people I have just
one small request. Perhaps, maybe you've got just enough energy
left to reach over and stick a fork in yourself- I think you're
done.

Subject:   What did you do to move the casinos?

Dear Governor Rendell:

I have lived in Philadelphia all of my life. As soon as I get a
chance, I will move from Philadelphia. Why? Because of all the
things that goes on here. Everything that happens is for the
financial gains of the politicians, nothing to do with the
citizens. Every time we turn around, something new happens that
costs us money. Buidling new homes on every inch of ground that
can be found cost us money because these homes are valued at
$275,000 and up. I live in Bridesburg and our homes are valued
at around $100,000. What makes it worse, these new homes get
tax abatements for 10 years and the tax structure in
Philadelphia in very, very unfair. But the answer is to build
more home, overcrowd the neighbors and pit neighbor against
neighbor. These people don't want to associate with us blue-
collar people because we low-class to them. And now you want to
build casinos right in the heart of Philadelphia. This will
make it unbearable for people to travel to and from anywhere
they go. The roads in Philadelphia can't handle anymore
traffic. We need less and less people not more. Crime will
explode in the city with casinos. How are the police going to
handle the extra crime when they can't handle it now? This is a
joke and that is why many people are moving out of
Philadelphia. My family has lived in Philadelphia since 1900.
My grandfather started a barber shop back in 1909. This is the
oldest operating baber shop in Philadelphia. Within 5 years, no
one in my family, including Ferros' barber Shop which is
operated by my brother Ken, will be left here. We will move out
of the city and move to the suburbs where live is great. People
say taxes are higher in the suburbs but with paying the city
wage tax and much higher Real Estate taxes that we will have to
pay will far exceed what it will cost somewhere else. And for
$275,000, the low-end price of a rowhouse in Bridesburg), I
could purchase a single home with around 1 acre of ground. I
know because I have been pricing them. I don't need to live in
a city where instead of getting rid of the crime, corruption and
waste to save millions and millions of dollars, it's better to
bring in casinos to raise more money and have more crime,
corruption and waste. And answer for the 2 casinos that said
they don't want to move and you say you don't have to power to
force them to move, well tell them to take their casinos
somewhere else. Tell them they won't open any casinos in
Philadelphia. You'll see how fast they will change their minds.

Thank you,

Robert Ferro

efforts you made to convince casiNO representatives and the
Gaming Commission to move the sites?

Unless you take some action I for one will show you what can be
done to insure will never be elected to public office again.
There is only one way to deal with elected officials who ignore
the needs of those they are suppose to represent. Do NOT Vote
for them or anyone they support.

The residents who live in the neighborhoods affected by your

show you on election day what we mean unless you do something to

Dear Governor Rendell:

The Philadelphia casinos should be moved to a new site where
they will not wreck residential neighborhoods.

Your sending one letter to the Casinos begging them to consider
moving is a highly insufficient use of your governmental
authority.

The residents of Philadelphia know that, if the political lust
for casino money were not the only thing motivating its elected
officials, those officials would begin listening to their
constituents and would exercise their power accordingly.

Since I will be living a stone's throw from this mega-structure,
I'd like to know what exactly was done by you on our behalf to
try to have these builders move to a more suitable site. No
other casinos anywhere are so close to residential areas. If we
were to use Atlantic City as one similar type scenario, then let
the neighborhood in Atlantic City speak for itself...you can't
walk anywhere outside of the casino without fear of being
terrorized, mugged or worse. Why do the people who pay their
taxes always end up being the ones without any say as to what
goes on in their own neighborhood. It's an injustice and will
cause more people to leave this city.

Last fall I worked for your campaign & then recieved a letter
that started out "DEAR FRIEND". Friends don't put casinos in
friends backyards. City council decided in 2002 that the club
element couldn't be kept out of the neighborhoods when they
banned the "nusiance clubs" from Delaware Ave. Nothing will be
different with casinos which are many times the size of those
clubs.

Subject:   You must do more to move the Philadelphia casino sites

Dear Governor Rendell:

I understand that the Philadelphia casino operators have
declined your request that they move the casino sites to
alternative sites.

Councilman Frank DiCicco has provided to you a list of
alternative sites and therefore the casino operators' arguments
that alternative sites do not exist are simply false.

The casino operators have, to date, been permitted to cherry
pick the presently proposed sites to the detriment of the
people of this Commonwealth and specificially residents of
Philadelphia. That mistake in the gambling legislation must be
corrected.

I urge you to support and champion legislation that would force
the casino operators to ensure that their businesses are not
located with 1,500 feet of residential neighborhoods, schools
and places of worship.

Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
