| Subject: | zoning reform could make a difference |
To the Editor:
The city of Philadelphia needs to remove the requirement for
parking to be included with every single new residential unit be
removed.
Here's a quote from a response Inga Saffron received to her blog
entry on the proposed condo tower at 16th & Lombard:
Quote:
"Discussed, but not shown, was a design for 45 foot tall
townhomes, with a single, large garage in the middle of the
lot.It fit the scale of the block, and building envelope allowed
by current zoning codes. Still, it consisted of a few, expensive
homes rather than many, mid-priced homes. As always, the need to
meet the number of parking spaces was given as the reason for this.
It is time that these requirements be revised- and we adopt a
more urban approach: New York's zoning allows for parking to be
ommitted when building are located near public transportation- a
sane, and rational solution, that allows for more creative designs."
End Quote.
The city is spending millions of tax dollars (whether federal or
local doesn't matter) on public subsidized housing when a simple
reform to the zoning code could make a very significant difference.
Philadelphia really needs to start using legislation, zoning and
other incentives in order to redevelop the city to a much greater
extent through investment from the private sector instead of
trying to be the private sector.

| Subject: | Eminent domain abuse in West Philadelphia? |
To the Editor:
Here's a copy of a letter I just wrote to the at-large members of
city council:
Councilwoman Blackwell appears to believe that it's necessary to
use taxpayer money to redevelop the 40th & Spring Garden area.
This just goes to show how out of touch she appears to be with
the neighborhood. The truth is that there is already a
significant amount of private investment going into that area and
her efforts to redevelop the area are throwing a monkey rench
into this process. I have already heard of several people who
have purchased properties in that area and invested significant
time and money in them, only to have the city take them by
eminent domain for this silly "Urban Renewal Area."
By the way, is it just me or does this bill make use of a
redevelopment plan that was approved 37 years ago? Could this be
an attempt to circumvent the recently approved eminent domain
reform legislation that passed in Harrisburg by using the
"exemptions" included in that bill for Philadelphia and other cities?
Once again, please oppose bill 060286 introduced by Councilwoman
Jannie Blackwell on April 20th.

| Subject: | Protest the plumber's union! |
This should be of interest to you, and proof that Philadelphians
really do want progress:
Spread the word...
On Sunday, April 2nd at 1:00 PM
Come to Love Park
And
Tell the Plumbers’ Union
they can’t flush progress!
Come out and show the unions and local politicians that you
support the use of waterless urinals to make the Comcast tower
the TALLEST GREEN BUILDING IN AMERICA!
Bring your inflatable rats, bring your toilet tricycles, bring
your silly protest signs!
Let the local politicians know that they have constituents who
will support them in taking on out of control unions!
Plans for Comcast’s new office building at 17th and Market call
for innovative green technologies that will make the building the
tallest green building in the country. As Philadelphia continues
to attract attention as an emerging world city, a project like
this is paramount to our fair city’s growth in the modern global
economy. Progressive projects bring progressive businesses and
progressive solutions to urban challenges.
Unions are a vital part of this city and have served a pivotal
role in getting Philadelphia where it is today. They have
protected workers’ rights and have won many important battles on
behalf of our fellow Philadelphians in the trades. However, times
are changing and some of the arcane stances of the unions must
change to allow for our city to continue its recent growth.
For the new Comcast tower to be certified as a green building,
the architects have designed bathrooms that will used waterless
urinals. The plumbers’ union, Local 690, has threatened stop the
building from using this new green technology. (see Inga
Saffron’s Inky article) Here at the facts about the urinals:
-they will save an estimated 1.6 million gallons of water a year
-using less water will ease the strain on the city’s already over
worked sewage system
-not just environmentally friendly, these urinals are more
sanitary and make for less odor
-the urinals still have drains and will still be installed an
services by the unions
-installation of these urinals may cause a shift in some jobs,
but will likely not cause a loss of jobs for the unions
-the Philadelphia chapter of the EPA supports the use of these
urinals
-waterless urinals are found in dozens of buildings around the
country, including at Walt Disney World and in an elementary
school in Pittsburgh
Let’s give the plumbers’ union a taste of their own medicine and
protest their ignorant stance…because when plumbers act like
this, they ain’t sh*t.

assist the Aztec program with travel expenses for future trips
to Walt Disney World with hopes for another opportunity to win

The “Aztec Art From A Champions Heart” art exhibit consists of

In 2004 the Aztecs faced tremendous odds trying to get there

be honest they almost did not make it there. After winning the
2004 Regional game the organization faced the incredible task
of raising close to $50,000.00, within a ten day time period to
cover the cost of escorting one team and there coaches to the
Pop Warner Super bowl that is held annually in December at the
Walt Disney World Sports Complex. In 2005 all the kids have
returned and they look poised for another shot at the title.
Many things happened in the last minutes before the Aztecs
would have had to forfeit there place in the 2004 National
Competition that made it possible for the team to reach
Orlando, it is not a guarantee that the same things would
happen again in 2005 that would allow the Aztecs the
opportunity to defend there title in Orlando. This is why we
are asking for your support during this fundraising event.

menu. Please commit by reserving a table (4 per table) for the

To the Editor:
To Whom it May Concern, My name is Lisa, i'am a white
italian, spaniard American woman of 43 yrs, raising 3 children on
my own, their father walked out 4 yrs ago and with no child
support. my oldest just turned 20, my 2nd is 17 and my youngest
is an 11 yr old boy who is disabled and recieves SSI.
I'am writing to you in desperation, i have tryed several other
possible organazations, etc and am still doing so, but i have
not yet been helped and dont know where else to turn.
my problem is this: I moved to West Pittston, PA, in jamuary of
2005, my family and i are on section 8 due to obvious lack of
money......we have been thru alot, especially over the past 4
yrs.......we use to own our own home and lost it along with
everything we owned except for the clothes on our backs and
several more in an overnite bag.....we lost our furniture,
clothes, jewelery,tv's, PC's and worst of all our very personal
things like my childrens photo albums, we even lost our family
dogs, whom meant everything to us.......I struggle everyday just
to make ends meet and fight to even want to live. i suffer from
severe depression, anxiety and panic attacks.........my disabled
child has adhd, ocd, bi- polar and intermediate retardation,
whom also suffers from depression.
my childrens father (my soon to be X) was abusive both mentally,
emotionally and physically and also controlling and
manipulative.........so, as you can see my children and i have
been thru alot, but, this is not the reason i'am writing you, i
just wanted you to know a little about my family and I.
I was also molested for several yrs by my pediatrician as a
young child and am now seeing a specialist for trauma and
stress, i'am not telling you all this for pity, i would just
like some empathy from you and help. The problem started a month
to the day we moved into the house were living in now, when we
saw the house for the first time, we fell in love, the
neighborhood was beautiful, the house was beautiful and spacious
and it overlooked the Sussquehanna river.
The trouble started with my next door neighbor and his wife for
no reason at all, they started calling the local police when my
dog barked, and i do mean that he was outside on his runner and
barking for 4 minutes and this was at 5:47 in the afternoon, i
couldnt believe that a policeman would waste his time to come to
my home over something so silly and not illegal in any manor.
that was just the beginning, with each day or week that passed a
police officer would show up at my door for various things, like
garbage accumulation, dog feces in my yard, they even went to go
as far as to say that my neighbor was complaining that he could
smell my cats thru the wall...........please keep this in mind,
i have never been ticketed for any of these supposed
crimes........yet it's 6 months , and i'am still being harrased
by my neighbor, his wife and several of the local police
officers, which i know are his personal friends, i and my
children, brother in law and friends have seen them at my
neighbors house on social calls.......the police officers i'm
speaking of, even refer to him as Wally, his name is Walter
Smith. every civil and privacy right i have as an american has
been violated by this man and the police. the policemen have
lied for him, yes even in court. they have threatned me and have
called me names such as low life welfare case, ginny,
etc......they have even told me to go back to NY and that they
dont like my kind here.........I'am a quiet law abiding citizen
whom has never been arrested or in trouble in my life, and the
same holds true for my children.. this man , his wife and the
police have caused my family so much aggravation, depression,
anger and paranoia( so much so were afraid to leave the house,
for fear of being persecuted). i also could not figure out how
my neighbor knew so much about me, until i found out recently
that his wife Annemarie Smith works for Human Resources.
i swear to you on my children that i or my children never did
anything to this man and his wife, not even so much as a
profanity.....yet he has and still calls us names, any and every
time he see's us.
please dont suggest for me to get a lawyer, we are poor and cant
afford one, also i did try to get a free one, but was told they
only do that for criminal cases( i would have to have been
arrested or something like that......
All i'm asking is that you please take my letter seriously, i do
have several witnesses and have written down, every date, time,
incident and persons involved and am telling you the complete
truth, so help me god.
I'am scared, alone and being abused, whom do i go to for help
when the police are on his side........I feel as if i'm a jew
during the time of the nazi invasion or a black in the south
during the 40's and 50's...........this is 2005, smalltown
America and the predjuice has'nt improved.......this is an
outrage!
i have also contacted the ACLU many times, they dont answer
their phone, nor have they so much as written me, and this has
been for 6 months now.........this is the reason people like my
neighbors and the local police get away with this kind of
behaviour and have been for several years and will keep on doing
it, till someone stands up and say's this is unacceptible!!!
i need someone with the courage to go up against these people,
it has to stop, it's killing my family and many others im sure,
both past and present.........
please pass this letter along to anyone you think can help, i
dont know how much longer i can go on like this.......
Please Help,,,,,,,,,,,,,Thankyou and Godbless, Lisa

| Subject: | Free the Ben Franklin Bridge Walkway |
To the Editor:
The Delaware River Port Authority's closing of the Ben Franklin
Bridge walkway to protect PATCO trains is a clear over-reaction
to the London bombings. This policy is harsh and is inconsistant
with other security measures that the Authority has taken, police
are not performing bag searches on trains or inspecting any of
the thousands of trucks that cross the bridge daily. Only the
lowly pedestrian or bicyclist deserves to be watched.
In New York City the Williamsburg and Manhattan bridges carry
subway lines, yet the walkways on these bridges have been open 24
hours a day 7 days a week since the spring of 2001. They served
as evacuation routes on September 11 2001 and during the Great
Northeast Blackout of August 14, 2003. Meanwhile the DRPA felt it
was prudent to close the Ben Franklin Bridge walkway for over six
months due to security concerns.
Closing the walkway disrupts the lives of bike and pedestrian
commuters and puts a severe penalty on the bicycle delivery
companies that rely on the bridge for their business. The DRPA
could easily apply for Homeland Security Funds to purchase
security cameras for the bridge walkway, and establish a security
hotline to report suspicious activity similar to NJ TRANSIT's
1-888-TIPS NJT.
A walkway that is free and accessible is good for the economic
health of Camden and Philadelphia . Creating disruption is a goal
of terrorism. Hats off to the DRPA for quickly raising the white
surrender flag.

| Subject: | Comcast Rules |
To the Editor: AS I sit back and observe the control that
Comcast has over our city, it reminds me of olden times,
when "warlords" controlled their domains through threat and
intimidation. In Philadelphia and the nation, I guess we could
add pay to play to those modes of control too.
Comcast has effectively stifled all competition (locally and
nationally) to gain unilateral power in the areas it dominates.
In this city, they stymie outsiders (remember RCN?) then whine,
cajole and "contribute" money as needed to the approriate city
officials.
Can't we stop this travesty? Instead of opening up the market
to other providers, City Council blocks any attempt from other
firms to penetrate this "shield" that the City has erected to
protect Comcast. Pay to Play is alive and well in this carnival
town.
Does anyone have a way for the taxpayers to regain control?

To the Editor:
If the electricity blackout continued, according to your Sunday
prime news, how "sad" that your ice cream would melt, etc. It
made me so sad that I didn't read on to hear how the Iraqi people
must feel when the U.S. pays for troops to kill them. How can a
naive American soldier tell whose a "loyalist", a "guerilla" or
just someone whose "temper" rose because the "coalition" has no
funds to resume their electricity or clean their water from the
contamination of our years of bombing and the subsequent deaths
"continuing" of hundreds of thousands of their children? And when
the morale of our troops declines from seeing the effects of all
this on the common people, and the U.S. provides air-conditioning
just for them, how do we expect the Iraqis to "love" us! I'll bet
our young soldiers are questioning our occupation and reasons for
it just as the Vietnam and Korean veterans have done. I refer you
to W.D. Ehrhart's book: The Madness of it all, Essays on War,
Literature and American Life.
