An article in the Los Angeles Times alerted me to Medpedia, a "work-in-progress" online encyclopedia similar to Wikipedia, but for health information only.  | About a month ago, Google added a useful security feature to Gmail: encryption. If you select the "Always use https" option in your Gmail account settings, Gmail will set up an encrypted connection between you and the Gmail servers, similar to the connections you're used to with, say, Amazon.com.
You ought to use https with Gmail, especially if you access Gmail on unsecured wifi networks in public places. Without https, a tech-savvy person sitting nearby could -- if properly motivated -- sniff your packets and hijack your account.

 | Today U.S. District justice George O'Toole, Jr. threw out a gag order against a group of students from Massachusets Institute of Technology who had discovered security holes in the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's smart cards. The students had wanted to present their findings at DEFCON 16 two weeks ago, but were prevented from doing so by the gag order.

 | Wired's Listening Post blog today reports on the compact disc's 26th birthday. Unfortunately, the article pronounces CDs dead:
"Because there is nothing faster, or better, than purely digital music fired across the internet's synaptic network."
Maybe ... maybe not. Untill all digital music is DRM-free, you run the risk of having your tunes evaporate, as users of Yahoo Music have recently...
