City Official: Public Can Sign Up for Liberty Medal Wait List
By Ed Goppelt Tuesday, 07/01/03 (1057088587915)
According to the city official responsible her office is maintaining a wait list for members of the public who wish to attend the Liberty Medal ceremony, but the official estimates the chances of any tickets being left over at "about zero." Mayor John Street is scheduled to present the prestigious award to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor this Friday, July 4, 2003 as part of the National Constitution Center's dedication ceremony.

This year's Liberty Medal has proved to be hot item--public tickets were already gone when I called Bonnie Grant on Monday, June 23, 2003. As Deputy City Representative for Special Events Ms. Grant is responsible for planning and implementing the City's annual Independence Day Ceremony.

Persons wishing to get on the wait list for tickets should call Ms. Grant's office at 215.683.2060 and ask to be put on the wait list. At last year's ceremony there were many empty seats (tickets were also required). According to Ms. Grant if seats are available members of the public will be let in, but she doesn't think that this is likely given the demand for tickets this year. Members of the public wishing to go this route are advised to get to the Security checkpoints at either 5th and Arch Streets or 6th and Arch Streets before 8 am, when the checkpoints will close.

Members of the general public were allotted about a third of all tickets--700--for this year's Liberty Medal ceremony. Other groups receiving tickets include contributors to the National Constitution Center (600), Liberty Medal Sponsors such as Sunoco and Channel 6 (500), and 200 lucky VIPs. Members of the public with tickets will be seated in bleachers errected in the 500 block of Arch Street. The dignitaries get to sit on the lawn of the newly completed National Constitution Center at 525 Arch Street.

According to Ms. Grant the Liberty Medal ceremony is expected to return to its usual spot in front of Independence Hall next year.
