Picnic area/Trash Magnet
2002/06/27 When I stopped by, this area
was clean and inviting. In the past, this
area looked like somebody dropped a trash bomb here--with beer bottles, cans, plastic bags sitting
in huge unsightly piles everywhere.
I was glad to see that FPC employees
are keeping on top of this "trash magnet."

Reeds, Wind, Water & Birds
2002/06/27 The marshes in FDR Park
give you some sense
of what this area of South Philly
must have looked like originally:
reeds, wind, water and birds.
I have seen these reeds filled
with chip bags and bottles
thoughtless visitors have
thrown into the marsh, but today the park
was clean as a whistle.

Lawn in front of Swedish Museum
2002/06/27 In the high season, lots of people
bring their lawn chairs and set up camp here,
like these two Philadelphians.

2 of 3 Portable Toilets Stationed in the Park
2002/06/27 According to the Daily News Series Acres of
Neglect, Fairmount Park has only
11 permanent bathrooms in the entire system.
In the summer, the FPC does install more portable toilets, such as these "Potty Queens", but
even the temporary toilets tend to be few and far between.

2002/06/27 Cleanliness is a never ending struggle.
How often are these portable toilets
emptied?

Trash
2002/06/27 One of the few instances of trash dumping I was able to find in the park.
Some people apparently think
it's ok to leave their trash
for others to clean up.

The Old Swimming Pool
2002/06/27 This used to be the site of an abandoned public swimming pool.
The huge pool stood empty for years as weeds poked through
its concrete floor.
I am told that a new pond will replace the empty
and decrepit pool.

Two of the Fairmount Park Eleven?
2002/06/27 According to the Daily News Acres of Neglect series
Fairmount Park only has 11 permanent bathrooms in the entire system.
My guess is that South Philadelphians don't realize how
lucky they are to have a real pair of bathrooms in their park.
Visitors to other parts of the Park, including Park Headquarters at Memorial Hall,
know how hard it can be to find a bathroom in the park.
