Dear Commissioner Nix and Mayor Street -
Congratulations to the City and the Park Commission for the
renaming of West River Drive from a proud city resident of many
years. What an inspiring speech by the mayor!
I attended the ceremony. What a shame to have had such a poor
turnout due, I presume, to poor publicity and outreach.
What a shame to have had the ceremony entrusted to the talk show
host, who turned it into a self-aggrandizing event (to noone's
suprise!).
As one of, by my count, about 3 caucasian private citizens who
attended the ceremony, what a shame to have effectively turned
this into a blacks-only event. I attribute this not to any lack
of interest or pride in the event by white citizens, but to the
selection of the radio station that so narrowly targets its
audience as the main promoter of the event.
best regards.

With your vote to sell Burholme Park you really let me down. I
had faith and hope in your system. Now, people are saying to
me "I told you so, it was a done deal".
You showed your true colors.

| Subject: | SAve our Green SPaces-Southern Blvd Park |
Bing, Bam, Boom 22 significant mature 20-30 foot tall trees
were chopped down by PENNDOT last week modification of I-76
ramps. It is alarming that a drastic change to the Landscape
can take place without prior approval of the Fairmount
Commission and an open notification to the community. I urge
you to make efforts to preserve the integrity of the Historic
corridor known as Southern Boulevard Park. A park that in
embedded on the South Broad Street corridor running south of
Oregon Avenue to the gatehouse of the Naval Yard.
This area is under siege because of increased Stadium
development and it is combined with a poor understanding of the
importance/significance of this 7 block long park with that
contains over 300 trees. PENNDOT and Streets Department or
stadium developers do not understand the integrated need of the
three parks of Marconi Plaza, Southern Boulevard, and FDR Park.
This area was reclaimed with millions of yards of fill and was
designed by an architect not by nature. It was built for the
America's Sesqui-Centennial Celebration in 1926. In
PennDOT/Streets/Stadium Owners treat it as a road and they only
see traffic lanes and areas for parking. The Battle of cement
and asphalt overshadows any need for green space, but the
choice must be better than that. Please help!
The 22 Trees that stood 20-30 feet tall generated enough oxygen
for 11 people for one year. Replacing them with stick thin baby
trees does not replace that, or the shade they provided to cool
the neighborhood or the beauty of their height and stature
standing like soldiers guarding the Broad Street greenway.
It is requested that The Commission (1) Notify PENNDOT &
Streets Department that they need to seek Fairmount Park and
public approval first before doing road work that changes the
landscape (2)that as a rule, replacement should always work to
increase the density or design aspects, not merely replace them
with young "stick" trees (3) Involving the Community in the
design should be mandated. (4) Help to increase the Identity of
Southern Boulevard Park by posting signs along the South Broad
Street corridor clearly indicating that it is Parkland
maintained by Farimount Park...this would help make it more
distinct as a park.
Above all save the stock of 300 historically designed blvd
trees that are still there from future plans to cut them down.
Regards,
John Nacchio Jr.
