| Subject: | Protect our neighborhoods from casinos! |
Dear Gaming Oversight Committee Member:
I urge you to vote House Bill 1477 out of committee before the
end of the year.
The two Philadelphia casinos have refused to consider moving to
other more suitable sites. House Bill 1477 would protect
neighborhoods by requiring casinos to locate at least 1500 feet
away from any residence, church or school.
I expect my elected officials to look out for the best interests
of me and my family. Most especially, the General Assembly must
take steps to protect the children of Pennsylvania and the
neighborhoods in which they live from casinos.
HB 1477 is common sense legislation that deserves your
wholehearted support. I urge you to vote House Bill 1477 out of
committee at your next committee meeting.
Thank you very much for your time,
David Oberdoester

| Subject: | Vote NO on SB 862! |
To my elected officials:
My husband and I are disgusted to read about SB862 and the
possibility that this bill will pass the House of Reps. We are
appalled to learn that if this bill should pass, Philadelphia
would have no control over any of the zoning and other
regulations pertaining to the Riverfront. The Riverfront
belongs to ALL Philadelphians, and it is NOT the place for a
strip of casinos. Casinos will NOT improve the state of our
city especially the neighborhoods adjoining the waterfront.
Just look at Atlantic City. It is proof that casinos do not
improve the quality of life in the surrounding area and do not
bring fulfilling, living wage jobs.
Two years ago my husband and I attended an open meeting at the
Seaport Museum regarding several designs for the Riverfront.
These designs were environmentally friendly and family
oriented. They were the type of design that enabled a person
to get excited about riding a bike from Wissinoming Park to
Fort Mifflin without ever utilizing a car-crowded street.
Unless a plan can be drawn up that includes open, accessible
space for recreation and opportunities for families to gather,
then we will NOT support any proposed plans for the Riverfront
that includes casinos. We urge you, we beg you, please vote NO
on SB 862.
Regards,
Rita Longan-Litzke and John Litzke, Jr.

Those of us who live in the suburbs are also concerned about the
quality of life in Philadelphia. Casinos will not improve it.
They will have a detrimental effect on life in Philadelphia and
the surrounding areas. Many of us work in Philly, and most of
us spend a considerable part of our food and entertainment money
there. Many of us hope to move to condos or townhouses in
Center City someday. Please keep the character of Philadelphia
as it is -- historic, colonial, beautiful. Develop the
waterfront, but make it lovely, like Baltimore's. Make it a
classy area where people will love to stroll and shop. Do it as
well as we are improving the Waterworks area. Don't downgrade
it with ugly casinos and 24-hour drinking. Phila. has long
struggled with a crime problem. What a setback it would be to
introduce casinos.

| Subject: | Minimum Wage |
I know in your heart that you know the importance of a living
wage for Pennsylvanians. It is time for Democrats to stop looking
at the sky, while the Wicked Witch spreads the letters "SURRENDER
DOROTHY!" across the sky. A minimum wage which will not support a
family at the poverty level is a recipe for crime, and a snag to
undermine the families of the poor.

Working people should make a decent wages. Full-time workers
should not need asistance. Raise their pay to $7.15 an hour and
the need for asssitance will decrease. Employers like Walmart
should not be depending on the taxes of working people subidizing
the people employed by Walmart and othe rlow wage employers.

| Subject: | Unvouchered expenses |
I live in Jenkintown and would like answers to the following
questions: Why was the pay raise passed without public
debate? Even if constitutional , doesn't taking the raise as
unvouchered expenses run directly counter to the public policy
that forms the basis for the prohibition against voting
yourself a pay hike and accepting it prior to the next
election? It seems to me that the answer to both questions is
self-evident, but I would like to hear your explanation. I look
forward to your response.

Please vote to repeal HB1954. The people in our communtity
should have a voice!!
Also, please support saving Burholme Park!! Parkland should
remain parkland. We should uphold Robert Waln Ryerss will.
Brownfield is the answer not parkland. To allow Burholme Park
to be developed would not help Cheltenham Village. We live
across the street from this park but we have no say!!!

Dear Representative Curry:
I am requesting that you support representative Greg Vitali's
amendments to the House Rules which are scheduled for vote on
1/31/05.
As I understand, these proposed amendments will allow
legislators to have 24 hours to review proposed bills rather
than the current allotment of one hour's time. Also, a short
summary of the Bill will be included. Presently, a bill number
with no explanation of the intended legislation is often all the
information provided for representatives. The most important
provision of Vitali's amendments require that legislators be
present in-person to vote and not be permitted to give their
vote to leadership to vote for them. I cannot stress the
importance of this point. Too often constituents read of
absentee voting practices. These practices serve to harbor the
publics' feelings of misrepresentation and "behind-the-scenes
deals" in Harriburg. Again, please support Mr. Vitali's
amendments and put an end to "stealth legislation".
Thank you,
George Wylesol
