| Subject: | emergency contraception, House Bill 288 (October 3) |
Dear Dan,
I assume you intend to vote "yes" on HB 288 – The Compassionate
Assistance for Rape Emergencies Act on October 3rd.
As you know, the act would require Pennsylvania hospitals to
provide comprehensive care to rape victims when they seek
emergency room care. This would include informing victims
about emergency contraception (EC) and providing the full
regimen to victims upon request.
To help convince your recalcitrant colleagues, please remind
them:
· Emergency contraception is not abortion and does not
interfere with the implantation of a fertilized egg.
· The Connecticut Catholic bishops just reiterated this
point yesterday when they announced Catholic hospitals in the
state will comply with their law and that providing emergency
contraception to rape victims was neither ‘intrinsically evil’
or an abortion. Catholic hospitals in 8 other states have been
providing emergency contraception to victims for years, without
issue.
· The bill needs to apply to EVERY hospital in the
state. We must in good conscience oppose any religious
exemption that does not ensure that a rape victim receives
seamless, comprehensive care.
· The bill does not infringe on an individual doctor's
or nurse’s or pharmacist's individual rights.
Thanks, Dan!
Best wishes,
Mary Ganguli
