Phila. officer shot to death
By Barbara Boyer, Mari A. Schaefer and Tom Infield
INQUIRER STAFF WRITERS
A Philadelphia police officer was shot and killed with a military-style assault rifle
late this morning when he confronted a band of robbers who had held up a Bank of
America branch at a ShopRite in Port Richmond.
"Tell my wife I'll miss her," Schiller Street residents heard dying Sgt. Stephen
Liczbinski say as they went to his side.
Other officers, catching up again with the robbers' stolen getaway car moments
later, shot and killed one of the suspects.
Hundreds of officers were still searching darkened streets tonight for one, two or
even more of the robbers. Authorities also had several people in custody and were
questioning them about the robbery and killing.
Tonight, police, using dogs and helicopters, believed they had cornered a suspect in
Tookany Creek Park near the intersection of Tampa Street and Wyoming Avenue.
"This is a tragedy for the entire city of Philadelphia," Mayor Nutter said at Temple
University Hospital, where the slain officer was taken.
Liczbinski, 39, of Northeast Philadelphia, was a 12-year police veteran assigned to
the 24th District in Port Richmond. He only recently had been promoted to sergeant,
and would have turned 40 on Tuesday.
GOOD WORK, Rep. O'Brien!

working cops and families.

What can we do to end this war? Don't please dismiss me because
my son serves in the military and I'm proud of that (he put on
full dress for Dad at Christmas when I last saw him). He's my
son. It's not what I wanted for him but he's an adult and if
you're my age you understand that our kids nod to us with love
and respect and go their own way like we did to our parents.
For what it's worth my wife and I are a 'military family' and
deserve a reply however vapid and cliched or honest and
honorable. I'm a Republican going back to my IUP Republican
Club days and can still sing the "Vote Bill Scranton" song to
the tune of the Pennsylvania Polka. Forgive me for falling in
love with a Democrat but she's still my girl after 34 years. My
question is simple. Bush sends my son to serve but his kids
don't serve. Does yours? I don't mean to be cruel in asking/oth
cherish our children. Something is wrong here.
When does it end? It's not a simple answer after all and
perhaps I shouldn't ask it of you. Victory came easier in WWII
against a stronger enemy that my late father-in-law fought
against in New Guinea and Leyte; ancient history.years coming
on now, dead kids, planes landing in Dover AFB with coffins
hidden under flags to get dumped in a hole for a failed policy
(and I think we both know this), destroyed families remembering
other times, and billions of dollars, and the injured put into
the VA system not worth the name. Neither of us are stupid and
can see this. Something is wrong here. So terribly wrong beyond
politics and ideology. I can do the numbers too' 3,200 dead,
24,000 wounded and the press doesn't count allies and Iraqis.
When does it end? Please stand up for peace. If we started the
draft again this war would be over tomorrow. But we won't we
can't fight this war with shared misery. I'm not trying to be
dramatic but my son is in uniform in a war without end. I don't
need a 'thank you for your response' reply. Too old for that
and my son deserves an answer beyond that, if not me.
Thank you for listening to this. I sincerely offer this to you
and wish you well.

Below is an example of what has Pa sportsmen and women in a an
uproar. I thought maybe you would like to get an idea of where
we are all coming from.
I ran across this on another site, posted by I guy I’ve
actually met and trust. It’s an issue that is definitely in
need of the sportsmen and womens attention. First I’ll post his
post, then some further detail on the issue. It appears as
though Rendell is renigging on a promise and is then striking a
backroom deal with Staback with a political favor to put an
unqualified person in a commissioners seat.
This from a closely placed source.
I just heard that Powell's name was going to be sent over soon.
The word is that Steve Crawford, the Gov. legislative liaison,
who is tight with Staback & Robb Miller , has convinced the
Governor that they are going to need Staback's votes on some
controversial (can you spell tax increase) issues coming up, so
they need to support his man for the job.
This is a travesty, and we need to get this info out to the
public.
Calls need to be made directly to the Governor's office
particularly, but also to Senate leadership. Let's make their
phones ring off the hook. The Governor's own sportsmen's
advisory council did not even approve this guy as being
qualified for the job, yet because of political meandering, the
governor is going to appoint him anyways, and the sportsmen and
women of this state be damned!
Now is the time for you, your friends and family, and any other
sportsmen you know to step up to the plate. Now is the time to
show the Governor, and his minions that they can't take the PA
hunter for granted.
Send a letter, an email, or better yet make a call!
Pass this on to anyone who will take the time to take action.
Do not pass on this. Do not think someone else will take care
of this.
Contact your state senator at the same time. They are the ones
that need to vote to appoint this unqualified person.
Let them know you don't like this backroom dealing. There is a
published promise by the Governor for how these selections are
made. Make them hold the Governor accountable !
Phone calls are best. Written letters are better than email.
Whatever you do - act!
If asked, support Jay Delany for the Region 7 Commission Seat.
Governor contact information
Send a FAX to Staback or other Representative
Now for some background detail:
I was emailed by a well placed, 100% reliable person about the
contents of the above post. So the accuracey is not in
question, or I would not have posted it.
About a year ago the call went out for a replacement for the
Region 7 Game commissioner. Several people showed up and
interviewed. Of them were this lawyer Powell and Jay Delaney.
A select group form those applying went for interviews with the
Governors Sportsmens Advisory Board. Jay Delanys name was
recommended as the most qualified - and submitted to the
Governor.
Powell was rated not qualified.
Jay Delany was interviewed by Sect'y D of the DCNR. This is a
requirement by the Governor. He again was recommended to the
Governor.
Sometime close to the election last fall, accusations of
improper meddeling started to surface. At was alledged that Rep
staback was pushing for Powell. His allie in this was his
former G&F Committee Staffer Rob Miller, who was now liasion
for the Governor to the Sportsmens Advisory Board.
Staback and Miller lobbied the governor and State Sentaor
Fumo... yes the same one just indited. Fumo supposedly sought
the lobbing services of a sitting federal judge in Philly to
pressure the Governor.
So now it has come full circle. Powell's name is being sent to
the senate. The qualified candidate is overlooked.
Who is Powell? No one knows. no one knows if he even hunts. We
certainly do not know if he has had any positive contributions
to the outdoors or for the betterment of hunting.
Jay Delany does though. They have been covered in both the
electronioc and paper press. Numerous times.
Stand up for what is right. Make those calls and send those
letters.
Support the QUALIFED CANDIDATE - SUPPORT JAY DELANY!

Just a reminder tha Pennsylvania constituents are still waiting
for reform from the State House, as promised when Rep. O'Brien
was elected speaker.
I appreciate the good-faith gesture of creating the Speaker's
Reform Commission. However, I question the need for debate on
such reforms as banning votes when most constituents are in bed,
public debate periods on proposed legislation, limits on
discretionary spending, more financial disclosure, and other
no-brainer reforms, many of which have already been proposed
and/or adopted by the Senate.
You're welcome to debate other issues such as term limits and
reducing the size of state legislature, but rest assure that I
stronly support these reforms, as do many of your other constituents.
The cynic in me is tempted to think that this "Speaker's
Comission" is merely a rouse designed to let voter anger "blow
over" while not getting any reforms in place. Please don't keep
us waiting.

Like many other residents of Philadelphia, I have chosen to remain a resident of this
city because of my affection for it and for the convenience and culture this city offers. I
have travelled and lived in other parts of the country and chose to return here.
South Philly, where I grew up, is one of the most peaceful and growing parts of our
city. Putting a casino on the riverfront in that section of the city would cause more
traffic and congestion the area already suffers because of the sports stadiums located
there. I urge you to leave Philly as it is and to abandon any plans to build a casino
within the city limits.

| Subject: | House Bill 888 Presumption of Shared Custody |
Mr. O'Brien, Over one year ago a bill (HB 888) was Presented
to the House, dealing with Presumption Of Shared Custody in
child custody cases. Many times I have written and you have
responded, and many times you appear to skirt the true issue.
Since you are not my representative,I do not have much ability
to influence you, but I am a voting republican with many
friends in your district and throughout the state. With that
said, and since you will most likely retain office my question
is simple.
Why are you sitting on HB 888, and refuse to release it for a
Vote?
I realize money and power corrupts the House and Senate of Pa.,
therefore most likely you are swayed by either the Bar
association or some other groups which provides in some manner
for you at election time.
If you think you are benefiting children in any way, you are
greatly mistaken. I guess personal experience is the only way
to determine that there needs to be a change in the family
Court system in Pennsylvania.

I write to you today to express my hope that you are able to
properly fund the Free Library of Philadelphia. Without access
ot our libraries, the students of the City of Philadelphia will
suffer greatly. So many school libraries have books and other
resources that are far out of date, our only recourse is to use
the Free Library of Philadelphia. To close the branches, or
reduce hours at the branches will adversely affect everyone as
well. Libraries need to be open and accessible when people need
them -- "Express?" Really.
Over the years, my family has relied heavily on all the
resources and wonderful staff of the Torresdale Branch. I write
on behalf of everyone who works there, everyone in our
neighborhood, and everyone in the City of Philadelphia who
utilizes these resources. Without access to the information at
the libraries, the entire City will suffer.

| Subject: | Proposed Realty Transfer Tax |
As a concerned citizen I write you today to strongly urge you to
oppose any increases in the realty transfer tax as a funding
mechanism for mass transit. While I believe funding mass
transit systems is a necessity, I do not feel that the burden
for revenue should be placed on the backs of the real estate
consumer.
Currently, the realty tax transfer tax in Philadelphia is
already 4%. Increasing the tax will only impede middle and
lower income individuals from purchasing homes. Additionally,
it will detract buyers of both residentail and commercial
property from purchasing in Philadelphia or the state as a
whole. Please do not compromise the real estate industry.

Dennis:
I know this hot potato has been dropped in your lap, and most of
it comes from the arrest of 11 "Christian" protesters at a
Philadelphia gay event in October. I thought you might be
interested in the latest quote from Michael Marcavage of Repent
America, the guy who started this all.
"According to the Scriptures, it's the government's job to
enforce God's law and to uphold the law, and the Bible talks
about how,I don't want to really get into this -- it'll make me
sound like I'm crazy -- but it does talk about how [homosexuals]
are to be put to death. The wages of sin is death. But I want
to make [it] clear that I'm not advocating the [independent]
killing of homosexuals. . . . I'm saying that the government's
duty is to uphold God's law . . . . I know that's harsh, but we
have all broken the law, God's law, and we need to be held
accountable."
Michael Marcavage, from an article "Jesus Geek Superstar"
published by the Philadelphia CityPaper.net.
Dennis, as my dad would say, this guy is a few short of a
dozen. I think Marcavage-based legislation is ill-advised.

| Subject: | Ghost Voting |
Mr. O'Brien,
As a member of your district, I am compelled to ask why have
you voted to allow 'ghost' voting in the legislator?
I fail to see the logic in allowing employees to not show up
for work and still receive pay. If your schedule is too busy
or if you are too important to participate in the democratic
system then you do not deserve to serve the pubic. Do not
doubt that other citizens with high work ethics would gladly
take your place.
My future voting habits will reflect on how you and others in
the House of Representatives voted on this issue.
