If you cannot or do not wish to pay for the easy access to public records Hallwatch offers, you have another option: go to City Hall. Looking up public records at City Hall may be not be as fast or as convenient as using Hallwatch, but it is free and the information is in some cases better than what Hallwatch can offer.
If you have access to the Internet, the BRT's excellent web site provides lots of useful information on city properties.
When I called the Records Dept. I was advised to come early in the morning as the office "gets pretty crowded in the afternoon."
The Revenue Dept. also maintains an automated response line you can call if you know the BRT (Tax Account) number of the property you are researching. Call 215.686.6442, then press "1".
